They also discussed mobility, safe harbor protections for existing CPAs, and how the changes align the UAA's model legislative framework with the laws recently adopted in certain states.

Technical updates: Melanie Lauridsen, VP, Tax Policy and Advocacy, provided insights into IRS modernization efforts, feedback from the AICPA member IRS survey and technical details of the tax legislation that passed the House Thursday morning. A: As of May 27, 2025, legislation creating a bachelor's degree path to initial CPA licensure has been signed into law or awaits gubernatorial signature in the following states: Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington.

Q: Does the new pathway require experience under a CPA or just within a CPA firm?

A: Most proposals specify that experience must be obtained under the supervision of a licensed CPA. Details may vary by jurisdiction.
