DC update: CPA.com CEO Erik Asgeirsson, AICPA CEO Mark Koziel, and AICPA EVP of Advocacy Mark Peterson provided analysis of the newly passed House tax bill and the pending reconciliation process in the Senate, and concerns related to SALT/pass-through entity taxes (PTET) included in the House version of tax legislation. They also discussed the GENIUS Act (stablecoin legislation pending in the Senate) and the initial hearing in the Senate relating to the IRS commissioner nominee Billy Long.
State of digital transformation of payments: BILL CEO René Lacerte and Erik discussed the current state of financial automation, payment flexibility and AI-driven advisory services that can help firms scale and deepen client relationships.
CPA licensure and pipeline: NASBA President and CEO Daniel J. Dustin and Mark Koziel highlighted approved changes to the Uniform Accountancy Act (UAA), introducing a third pathway to CPA licensure. They also discussed mobility, safe harbor protections for existing CPAs, and how the changes align the UAA's model legislative framework with the laws recently adopted in certain states.
Technical updates: Melanie Lauridsen, VP, Tax Policy and Advocacy, provided insights into IRS modernization efforts, feedback from the AICPA member IRS survey and technical details of the tax legislation that passed the House Thursday morning. Melanie also reviewed changes to the PTET and SALT deductions that negatively impact CPAs and other professionals and reiterated a call to action for members to contact their senators to explain why these provisions are harmful to certain professionals.
